Parents & Practices

With younger players parents can be very helpful with practices. If teams are short or uneven a parent can serve as “goalkeeper” or assist with other activities. Don’t be afraid if your coach asks you to help out.

For the younger grade levels it is important that a parent/guardian is available in the event of an emergency. Notify your coach if you are leaving in order to reach you or have another parent available to assist if your child should need you.

Your coach will contact you to introduce themselves and pass along any other pertinent information. Contact your coach directly for any questions. You will get a schedule on the first night with your coach’s name and phone number.

Code of Conduct for Parents

  • Be your child’s BEST fan! Support your child unconditionally and make him/her feel like a winner EVERYTIME!

  • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

  • Encourage children to participate, do not force them.

  • Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.

  • Encourage children always to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.

  • Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game.

  • Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skilful plays by all participants.

  • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from all soccer activities.

  • Respect the decisions of officials and teach children to do likewise.

  • Learn the rules of the game and the policies of the organization and the Winkler Amateur Soccer Fields.

  • Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Without them, your child could not participate.

  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

  • Be kind to your child’s coach, other volunteers including board members and convenors, and to the officials. The coach, board members and convenors are volunteers –giving of personal time to provide a recreational activity for your child. They are providing a valuable community service, often without reward other than their personal satisfaction. Without them your child could not participate.

  • Believe that referees, just as coaches and players, are attempting to do their best. Refrain from speaking to officials, unless it is to say thank you after the game. If I have questions or concerns with the referees, speak to the coach after the game or at practice.

  • Understand that your attitude can influence the players, coaches and spectators.

  • Demand a sports environment for your child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and refrain from their use at all Winkler Amateur Soccer events.

  • Be sure your child is available for most practices and games. Practices are as important as games. Children who simply don’t show up for practice and/or games are letting everybody down. If you know your child is unable to attend a practice or game, give the coach advance notice to enable proper planning.

  • Report all injuries, medical conditions (such as asthma) or extenuating circumstances (such as lack of sleep or family crisis) that may affect the player, to the coach.

  • Send your child ready to play and plan to arrive on time.
